Thanksgiving Table

Friends,

What are your plans for Thanksgiving? Have you decided on decorations? Here are some ideas I pinned this week.

I’m really liking natural decorations more and more. The kind where you just go outside, gather some branches, leaves, and rocks, and you are done. It looks pretty, doesn’t cost anything, and it doesn’t add to the landfill.

How about you? Do you go all out for the holidays, or do you have pretty china you use for all special occasions?

Have a lovely weekend,

Sofija

Today is St. Martin’s Day in Germany. It is a sweet tradition I grew up with and miss. There are many origins to the celebration but the one I remember is the Roman Soldier St. Martin of Tours, who gave up half of his coat to a poor man on the road on a cold winter night. He was riding on his horse, with nothing on him other than his sword and cloak, when he saw the person in need. He cut his cloak in half and gave it to the poor person. It is a sweet way to start the holiday season  centered on giving and showing compassion.

In Germany it is mostly celebrated by pre-school aged children and their parents. Children will participate in processions after dark, carrying handmade lanterns and follow a horse-back rider caring a sword and a cloak. The rider will lead them back to the pre-school, where a warm fire and hot beverages are waiting for them.

Have you ever participated in one of these? Or did you grow up with other traditions you miss?

3 Tips for a Fun and Dynamic Family Picture

Friends,

It’s November and chances are you are thinking about family pictures to put in your Christmas cards for the relatives. Last year my family did a photo shoot with the talented Emily Mulder from Lonely Mountain Photography. It was the first time I had used props in a family picture, and I really liked how much they added to the pictures. I had so much fun planning and thinking about it. I think the planning helped me keep the cost low. For instance when months earlier I happened to be at a store and see clothes on sale I would buy it with the photo shoot in mind. While I mostly used clothes we already owned (there are 8 of us and a whole new wardrobe was not in the budget), I wanted to find a stand out piece like the red cape on my then 6 year old. Here are some ideas to try to change your next photo session up a little bit.

1.  Use fun props

The theme I had in mind was our family delivering tons of presents. The wheel barrow came in handy and made a fun seat for the youngest. The presents I wrapped with a gigantic roll from Costco, very cheap.

2. Movement

teachwhereyouliveI like photos with movement. People walking, running, or throwing stuff in the air. It gives the photo a more natural feel.

3. Different perspective

tasha

Shoot from a child’s perspective, or maybe from above or below.

Most importantly have fun. Don’t worry about everybody looking perfect. You might have noticed that my youngest does not smile on any of the pictures. I kind of like that; it shows her personality. Don’t forget to reward your kids for being patient and doing a good job.

You can find last year’s post from the same photo shoot here and here.

Have a great next photo session,

Sofija

Halloween Costumes Continued

Hello,

Two more weeks till Halloween. Do you know what you will be wearing? Our neighborhood will be encountering a lady bug (3 year old), spider girl (5 year old), black cat (7 year old), and zombie (12 year old) this year. My 9 year old son hasn’t decided yet.

Here are some more ideas.

The British clothing company no added sugar did a fun fall/Halloween shoot in an old house in London. Take a look.

All pictures taken by fashion photographer Sandra Freij for no added sugar.

Have a spooky day,

Halloween Costumes

Friends,

Halloween is rapidly approaching and we are having lots of conversations about costumes at our house. Who is making their own costume, what do we already have on hand, what do we need to buy? While I can’t get into the creepy, scary, witchy part of Halloween, I love the costume part. Pinterest is a great source to find cute costumes. Take a look.

This country is so creative with their costumes…love it.

Hänsel and Gretel are probably my favorite ones. I have been entertaining the idea of doing a Grimm Brothers fairy tale theme some day…

Happy 4th of July!

_MG_7657 _MG_7709 _MG_7744

Are you ready for the 4th of July celebration? Any fun plans?

We finally had a good amount of rain last night. I’m hoping it was enough for some of the fire restrictions to be lifted in this state. Maybe we will be able to light some fire works after all…

I wish you all a wonderful time celebrating with your friends and family!

Easter Egg Hunt

aida ester 20113

Friends,

How was your Easter? Did the weather hold up for an egg hunt outside? Ours  was beautiful. We did an impromptu hunt with our neighbors. We have done it several years in a row so we can pull it off pretty fast. Take a look.

I have a confession to make. After buying the ham, asparagus, and potatoes we ended up getting pizza!! I think this was my first time not eating a festive meal for Easter. With my husband still recovering and not feeling so well I ended up doing the church/basket/easter hunt largely by myself and I was too tired to worry about cooking the meal. Oh well, there will be a large, festive meal in our near future.

With Easter behind us it is time for met to get ready for birthday season. Most of our children’s birthdays are stacked up in April and May, add to that my niece’s birthdays, holidays, and Mother’s Day- the party never ends…

Have a lovely day,

Sofija

Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Eggs

Friends,

Last week, after my husband’s operation, we came home to a clean house and to these beauties. Am I the only one who didn’t know about jeweled eggs??? My lovely daughter Esther (an 11 year old version of Martha Stewart) made these. She colored the eggs, added the shiny embellishments, and then did some final touches with markers.

The egg colors and embellishments all came with the store bought egg coloring kit you can find at Target or a local supermarket.

The anticipation of Easter is steadily rising in our house. How about yours?
