The VLA

I dug through some old pictures and found these. The Very Large Array is a pretty surreal place. Jodie Foster’s movie Contact was filmed there. It is in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico (2 hours southwest of Albuquerque), surrounded by nothing but high desert.

There is a museum and some outdoor activities to learn about astronomy. Astronomer all over the world use these giant telescopes for their research. Make sure the telescopes are in a favorable configuration before you come. Some configurations have the telescopes too far stretched apart and you won’t be able photograph them nicely in a row like I did above. We went there twice, so the pictures above are from a different visit than below with the kiddos. DSC01622 the kids in front of an parabolic dish this is what i'm eating for lunchGosh, they were so young. The boy in the blue shirt is my nephew. The last picture is my favorite.  Just in case you are wondering what Shane had for lunch that day…

If you make the trip bring lots of sunscreen and a hat. There is absolutely no shade. There is nothing to eat there and the nearest town is half an hour away.

Have a great day,

Mini Boden Fall/Winter 2013

Here is the Boden fall/winter collection. As usual fun, colorful, and comfy, which is exactly why I like them so much. Take a look.

My favorite outfit would be the one top right, the boots, striped tights, yellow dress, and timeless grey cardigan. Toggle coats are my all time favorite.

I usually gravitate towards the toddlers section but they had so many good options for tween and teens, I had to share.

By now I imagine EVERYONE is back to school. For us it is week 4 already. Whew, time flies!

Have a lovely day,

Sofija

An Update on us

photoFriends,

how was your week? How is everybody adjusting to their new school year? Our school is going really well- big sigh of relief! This time around last year was so challenging, I needed a year like this. Last year my two oldest started an online school and it took about 9 weeks to get used to it. That meant me spending about 4 hours each day with my then 6th grader, lots of frustration, tears, and how I am I supposed to do this?! Not fun! This year they both know what is expected and how to get it done on their own. Which gives me the time I need with my 4th, 2nd grader, and Kindergartner. Suffice it to say life is so much more manageable for me this year…

Finn, my 15 year old, also started a college class this year. We let him pick a class he is interested in to hopefully give him a positive experience the first time around. What makes this European mama immensely proud is that he uses public transportation to get to his class. I know if you live in other big cities, especially on the East Coast, public transportation is not a big deal, everyone uses it. Here in Albuquerque it is just an afterthought for the have nots. It is really important to me for my kids to rub shoulders with low income people, and also for them to be able to get places without mom shuttling them. You might remember me discussing this topic here.

Speaking of rubbing shoulders with the poor. Our church decided to collectively be involved with a middle school located in an immigrant, poor neighborhood of our city. I have been waiting for something like this for years, so glad our church is doing it! My husband will help out with their IT needs, tomorrow I will go along hiking with some of the students, and my hope is that my kids will be involved in some capacity as well. Finn is always explaining concepts to his younger siblings, he could totally tutor.

I don’t do a post on our family very often, but I think it is important. I always enjoy when other bloggers give updates on their family life.

Any big plans for the long weekend? We invited friends and will be busy cooking on Monday, so I might not post till Tuesday.

Have a lovely weekend!

Edible Works of Art

Instagram foodie Samantha Lee made these works of art to encourage her daughter to eat her food.

Seriously, what is going to happen when this child encounters a school cafeteria for the first time?! Horror and disgust. Well, she will probably bring a terrific sack lunch.

Sigh, not even these culinary delights would entice my 9 year old picky eater son…But they would totally work on my girls.

Oilily Turns 50

The Dutch company Oilily turns 50 this fall. I have been a fan for 20 of those years. I never get tired of the quirky, colorful, mismatched  goodness. And the creativity and art they put into their magazine publications have always been a delight.

Happy Birthday, Oilily!

The checkered knit dress and the striped tights in the second to last picture are my favorite. The floral, collared blue dress in the last picture would look adorable on my 5 year old.

Can’t wait to see what they come up with the next 50 years…

Home-school Statistics

homeschool

I honestly don’t think that home-schooling is the only option. I think there are really wonderful private, public, and charter schools. I have been home-schooling for 8 years and it has not been easy. That said I also believe that home-schooling is a really good option and paving the way for a better way to educate in our country and hopefully in the world. The chart above proves that you don’t need a lot of money. Home-schoolers spend on average $500 a year and score in the upper 80th percentile in state testing. Our state spends $5000 per student a year and ranks very low nation wide. I think this is good news for the rest of the world who don’t have thousands of dollars to educate their children.

But here is how I hope that home-schooling will change how we educate our children. Home-schoolers educate individuals, not masses. They understand that every child is different, learns at a different pace and in a different way. It allows for children to take longer to learn to read or understand a certain math concept.  At the same time they don’t need to get bored with concepts they already understand.

What do you think? Has this chart answered some of the questions you had? Did anything surprise you?

Happy Monday!

A word of advice from my 2 year old: If you plan on rolling a ball down your steep driveway you must do so in style. Apple sunshades are a good start…

Happy Monday!

I anticipate this week to be busy, getting my 15 year old ready for his first college class, and the general busyness of schooling the kids…These pictures put me in the right frame of mind. 🙂

H&M Back to School Tops for $5

Have you done your school shopping yet? If not consider H&M, they have a lot of cute tops for just $5 each.  Take a look.

This is just a sample there is much more on their website. My girls would love the butterfly or the bunny top.

If you are not familiar with H&M I would describe it as the Swedish version of Old Navy. It is a one stop shop for the whole family with different styles (trendy, athletic, classic). Just like Old Navy their quality is hit or miss. But their children’s clothes tend to be pretty good quality in my experience.

To my Chicago readers, I am jealous, cause you guys have a store in the city!

Have a lovely weekend, I’ll see you back here next week.
