Moments

A few pictures from this week. They look so calm and serene, when in reality my week was such a whirlwind that I had serious concerns about dropping off a child at the wrong place, or forgetting to pick her up altogether. I consciously struggle to keep my life slow; and this week I lost. But next week I will try again…
Have a restful weekend,

Sharpie Art

My 12 year old is pretty artsy and always trying new projects. Recently she started doing sharpie art and I love what she comes up with. Have you heard of it?

She usually comes up with a design of her own or she finds a picture online.

Here is another one she did.

You can do sharpie art on pants, shoes, bags…the possibilities are endless.

Have a great day,

My Top 5 Baby Gadgets

Friends,

We have been raising children for almost 16 years, in three different states, 4 different cities/towns, in some pretty unusual square footage situations…We had our first two in a tiny city apartment, you know the ones you hear about in NY city, where everything happens in one room? We had had loft beds and fold up tables before there was IKEA. Next we moved in with my in-laws, where we raised three children in a two bedroom and one bathroom space. After that we had 4 kids in a 900 square feet student townhouse. 5 kids in a 1,500 sq. ft. rental house (ONE bathroom), and now we are in 2,500 sq. ft. house with six kids (with 3 bathrooms!). I have learned that you can perfectly raise children without a changing table, baby swing, or Exersaucer. However here are my top 5 items that I have enjoyed in most of those spaces and wouldn’t want to go without.

1. Baby bouncer.

$(KGrHqVHJEQFJGGNQ9WHBSW+4N!5Qg~~60_35These are great for having a safe place for baby to hang out while you do stuff. They are small and light weight to carry from room to room. I love them for feeding babies their first rice cereal.

2. Mclaren umbrella stroller.

41gB4nJxP6L._SY300_I only discovered this stroller with our last baby. Too bad. I could have used them on a couple trips to Europe. They are so lightweight, great for city travel, yet sturdy. They are high enough where you don’t have to bend over, and easy to push even an older child. The only drawback is that they don’t work for infants; I mostly use carseats for that age.

3. Trip Trapp chair.

31EQ1EGW01LI could never afford the real Tipp Trapp by Stokke. I bought a cheaper version somewhere else.  What I like about these chairs is that you can use them from about 12 months to adult. The chair grows with the child by changing the hight of the foot rest and seat. Often when babies grow out of high chairs they are still too small to sit on a regular chair. I like that toddlers can be strapped in, but older kids can climb up and down themselves; it saves a lot of lifting.

4. Ikea crib.

sniglar-crib__24122_PE109000_S4We bought this bed for about $100 and used it with all of our 6 children. It converts into a toddler bed. It is sturdy (believe me, if it can survive us, it can survive anything) and a great value for the price.

5. Infant bath tub.

71scwTqpABL._SL1500_I know you don’t really need these, but boy do they make bath time easier….

How about you, what is your favorite baby gadget? Are you secretly hanging on to a couple even though you are way past the baby stage? I know I am going to have a real hard time getting rid of our crib…and the chair. So many memories…

Have a great day,

Sofija

Tent Rocks: Family Hike

Friends,

Tent Rocks is one of our family’s favorite places. It has all the right elements to make it a fun family outing: a 1.2 mile hike through a beautiful, otherworldly canyon, a challenging climb, and rewarding views at the top. We have gone with our kids ranging from baby to teenager and it was always very doable. For instance I typically carry the baby or toddler (whatever we had at the time) on my back, and my husband would assist/carry the second youngest. I would say kids aged 4 and older can pretty much most of the hike with some assistance. Be sure to bring lots of water especially between May and October (it gets hot once you are out of the canyon).

Here are some pictures I took when we went with friends last year.

We went in March. It was cool at the bottom of the trail, but once we were in the canyon it got warmer. So we left some of our jackets and hid them behind some trees. Below is our friend Jenna at the beginning of the trail. You don’t need special shoes, comfortable walking shoes will do.

Our older children typically run ahead and get to the top way ahead of us. The trail is pretty easy to follow, not many opportunities to get lost. However the last part is steep, so I suggest having kids 10 years or younger with an adult or a teenager.

The canyon is pretty narrow in places, so strollers don’t work.

Lucille was 4 years old when we did this hike. She needed some assistance at times but did pretty well overall.

The Little Things

20140307-082854.jpg
A couple of weeks ago I took the kids to Style America on $10 Tuesday. We monopolized all the stylists for about an hour and I’m pretty sure they are now updated on every detail of our lives.
What surprised me what a difference this had made. Sometimes little changes can safe a lot of time in a large family. Bath time is so much faster now that I don’t have to wash 3 heads of long hair anymore. Going to church , or going anywhere, is so much easier without having to worry about combing and styling all that hair. They can pretty much comb it themselves now. We have cut out a lot of complaining about pain and discomfort. Don’t get me wrong I love long hair on girls. I love when my 12 year old does pretty hairdos on the three youngest. But I am just not that kind person. I never spend much time on my hair and I sure don’t do it on the kids, either. Sometimes when I see my friend’s six kids perfectly groomed at church I know it is possible. But oh my, do I love those hair cuts! I think I’ll keep them short until they are old enough to do their own hair…I love looking at them now without fussing over knots and tangles.
How about you, have you found little things that made your life a whole lot easier and more enjoyable?

Rain

20140304-091006.jpg
Friends,
I have missed a couple of posts here. My mind has not been clear enough to write anything. When wrestling with some heavy issues, posting about children’s fashion does not seem genuine.
Please be patient with me.

Picture taken by my daughter this weekend. When you live in a place where the sun always shines, rain is a welcome help to reflect, to be sad, to grieve.

Early Spring

It’s snowing and freezing in most of the country… Meanwhile in New Mexico it is a sunny 60F and fire season started early.

What are your plans for the weekend? Tomorrow three of my girls will be spending the day with their American Heritage Troop. Sunday our 9 year old son is having a Birthday, nothing big, just cake and ice cream. With six kids we decided to let them have a bigger party every other year. It’s more doable for us that way. On the off years they still have cake and get to choose a restaurant for dinner. Short and sweet. With six kids it always feels like a big party…
Have a great weekend,
Sofija
