Caramel Baby and Child

Hi there,

Drooling over kid’s fashion is a happy diversion for me. It has been ever since I found out about Oilily many many (I won’t tell you how many) years ago. I couldn’t believe how creative and stylish kid’s clothes could be. Recently through Pinterest I found bloggers who inspire daily with new children’s collections. Smudgetikka is one of them. The pictures below are from her blog.

How about that adorable baby with the gnome hat? My favorite is the girl (3rd picture from top) with the folklore shirt. I have been watching too many Sherlock series lately, so the boy’s hat hits the spot. So does the girl wearing green tweed sporting a Miss Marple look.

Caramel Baby and Child is a British company (of course) that blends a timeless tailored look with  quirky, modern touches.

You can find other children’s fashion I have been pinning here.

Have a great day!

Sedona

Friends,

If you plan on visiting Sedona, do it in the fall. It is not too hot, and the colors are pretty. Sedona is nestled in a valley. We started from the north, thus getting beautiful views of the valley from the top (see above).

As you drive down into the valley you will see a wall of rocks for miles. A river runs parallel to the highway, and there are lots of camping spots along the way.

This at the bottom of the valley. You can park here and go on long or short hikes. Nearby here is also the center of Sedona, with lots of touristy shops, restaurants, and hotels. I found Sedona much bigger than I expected. If you camp near the center you can mountain bike or hike right from the town. Be aware that you must secure a camp site down there months in advance, they fill up quickly. My husband got a shot of me taking pictures.

We didn’t have much time as we were driving through on our way to Phoenix. I will be back soon for sure. My husband has taken his Boy Scout troop there several times. They go mountain biking, and then cool of in the river at Slide Rock. You can rent bikes and fuel up on coffee at BikesNBeans.

How about you, have you been here? How long would you recommend staying?

Road Trip

Friends,

we just got back from Arizona. We met up with my sister in Phoenix and had a great time with her and her family. Here are some pictures I took as we made our way to Phoenix. When I think road trip my mind goes to Route 66, vast open spaces, and blues skies.

Grumpy travelers are always part of our trips.

We took a detour to Sedona.

We stopped at a fantastic pie place. Still thinking about that chocolate cream pie.

What would be a road trip without gas stations??

I will be back here with some more pictures from our trip soon.

Film Set

Friends,

Remember how I told you about my 11 year old being on an American Girl film set? Well I managed to get a picture of Esther while the crew was breaking for lunch. She is the one in the middle with her two friends from her homeschool co-op. The one on the left is holding a hot dog that she wasn’t allowed to eat. They were shooting a parade in old town Albuquerque. The consensus was that being in a movie is really really fun- for the first two hours. After that it becomes boring, shooting the same thing over and over again from different angles. As I was waiting for Esther to be done I got to see Jane Seymour walking around the set. I couldn’t get close but she looked great. Smaller than I thought, very petite. She was wearing a long, black skirt, black jacket, white ruffle shirt, and a black hat with a red flower. I was told she didn’t want her picture taken so I didn’t bother to try.

As fun as this was I don’t see a future for us being extra’s on film set. But it was fun to see how they do it up close. I liked how much detail they put into it. The popcorn and cotton candy for the parade were made on the set. They were even roasting green chilli on the side of the road.

As you are reading this I will be on my way to Phoenix to meet up with my sister and her family. So exited to see her again. I will see you back here next week hopefully with some enticing road trip pictures.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ancient History: Fun Links

Welcome,

Thank you for stopping by.

Here are my favorite  links and activities useful for studying Ancient History.

  • Take a virtual tour through an ancient cave in France here: www.lascaux.culture.fr. (If the link does not work just copy and paste) This is really cool. You can slowly walk through each room and they explain what it is that you are looking at. The whole thing is kind of eerie but soothing. I could spend hours walking through those caves.
  • Meet Oetzi the iceman, found in Europe. Find out what he looked like, what he did for a living, even what he ate. www.iceman.it/en/node/226
  • Test your mummy making IQ. I made one mistake, see if you can beat me. Make sure you have eaten before you attempt to mummify, as you will have to extract the pharaoh’s brain:www.discovery.com/games/just-for-fun/mummymaker
  • Use the hieroglyphic typewriter to write secret messages. www.eyelid.co.uk
  • Be a tourist in Ancient Rome: this video takes you on a virtual tour around Rome with an expert explaining who built the buildings and what they were used for.

Have fun with these. As I find more interesting links I will share them with you.

Balloon Fiesta

One of our favorite things to do in Albuquerque is the annual balloon fiesta. The fiesta is a big event. It seems like the whole city shuts down and traffic comes to a screeching halt (which is unusual around here). For 9 days you can see hundreds of balloons flying above the city every morning. It is quite a sight. But it is even better to be there. I was told it is the only hot air balloon event were visitors can walk on the field amongst the balloons. You can stand right next to them as they take off. We go on the days when all the special shapes take off. We try to be there by 6am because the balloons take off at sunrise. Here is a picture of me in front of scores of balloons being inflated.

There are favorite shapes that come back year after year, like Darth Vader (below), Spider Man pig, a haunted house, and many more. One year I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a balloon shaped as a pitcher with apple wine which is only made in the county of Germany where I was raised. Balloonist from all over the world come here. My kids collect the cards they hand out telling people who owns the balloons and where they are from.

My kid’s favorites are the bees below. The first year we came there were a girl bee and a boy bee. They would hold hands as they go up and even kiss up in the air. The crowd always cheer when they kiss. Last time we went they had had a baby, now there are three bees. So sweet. You can only see two, they third one hasn’t been inflated yet.

Here is a ballon from the inside. I was told Noah’s Ark is the only one that has a scenery on the outside and inside.

Here is Noah’s Ark on the outside, just about to take off.

This picture shows you how close these balloons are and how many people stand around them watching. The butterfly was my 4 year old’s favorite.

Here is my 4 year old warming up with some hot chocolate. It is pretty cold until the sun comes up.

You can get an idea how many balloons are in the sky, I read we have around 600 taking off each morning.

Friends, if you are planning a trip to New Mexico, this is the time to come. If you are brave you can even hitch a ride for about $250.

Have a wonderful day,

Sofija

Balloon Fiesta

Annika

Hello,

How is your week going? Mine is going well. With prospects of going to the Balloon Fiesta and celebrating our anniversary this week, it couldn’t be much better.

I thought I was done posting on children’s fashion for a while. But then I stumbled upon Annika. Best find on Pinterest last week for sure. I had some difficulty tracking down the source. As far as I can tell it is a South Korean company with a Swedish background. Not sure what I like more about it, the clothes, the props, or the fact that it takes me back to my own childhood.

Is this cute or what? The head scarves, the knee high socks, bloomers, and pea coat jackets. And the colors…I wouldn’t mind hanging out in this place all day.

While I keep drooling over these pictures you can find more on Pinterest or on their website e-annika.com.

Stay tuned for pictures from the Balloon Fiesta (if the weather holds up).

My Baby Turned Two

Hello Friends,

Our baby turned two last weekend. It was a very sad day for me. I just don’t want here to grow up. It’s happening too fast. But we had a party anyway. And for the occasion we flew out a professional photographer to capture the memories. Or rather, we invited our friends, and she happened to bring her oh so nice camera. The party was low key. I didn’t have much time to prepare. The beautiful raspberry mouse chocolate cake came from Whole Foods. Usually my 11 year old bakes the cakes for our birthday, but she was too busy with school this week. We bought the cake, and my 11 year old decorated it with some cake toppings we had gotten donated from a friend. I thought it turned out pretty nice for being completely impromptu.

The Birthday girl had just gotten up from her nap, so she is still a little sleepy in some pictures. And she generally didn’t get what the fuss was all about.

Here I am cutting the cake. Between my friend and I’s kids, we have enough to make it look like a big party.

By now she has woken up and realizes there is some yummy cake coming her way.

Life is good.

Love the pictures. My house never looked so good. If you would like to see more of Emily’s work go here.

Have a wonderful day,

My Baby Turned Two

friday-grams

Friends,

how was your week? Ours has been busy with school. I can’t believe in two weeks we are already done with the first quarter. We have been working hard. That is probably why I haven’t posted much school related; I’ve been too busy “doing school”. Above is Shane working on spelling.

Above is my first grader Ella working on her reading.

Even the little crew is working. Above we have Lucille and Natasha at our home-school co-op. Natasha can barely reach the table, but she feels so big doing pre-school.

Recently we took a small break when we had an old friend visit us. He is a musician and came to Albuquerque to do a show. He might be the best hammer-dulcer player in the country. He and his friends did a concert right in our living room (above). I could get used to concerts in my house.

Here is my toddler styling.

Rain in the desert, always pretty.

Any plans for the weekend? Besides the usual shopping, church, exercise, we do have plans. My man is taking me to an October Fest tomorrow. I can’t wait to go on a date. I doesn’t happen often enough.

See you back here next week!

He Shall Set the Captives Free

Friends,

Last week I got an e-mail from Joshua DuBois and it made my week. Never heard of him? Well, I hadn’t either. He introduced himself as  leading  President Obama’s faith based office in the White House. He said that my signing a petition to end human trafficking and sex trade made a difference. I might add here that 75,000 people signed that petition and subsequently received this e-mail. Still I felt like I really made a difference. I have signed tons of petitions and written letters to Senators, but this one, coming from the White House, really felt like I was part of a little bit of history.

Here are some of the facts:

  • Each year, nearly 2 million children are exploited in the global commercial sex trade. (UNICEF)
  • 27 million men, women and children are held as slaves. (Kevin Bales, Disposable People)
  • 1 in 5 women is a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime. (U. N. Development Fund for Women)

As a result of the hard, relentless work of organizations such as International Justice Mission, World Relief, Catholic Charities, and others, President Obama addressed this issue recently at the UN and is taking some decisive steps to stop it.

“The President’s executive order stated that the U.S. government “bears a responsibility to ensure that taxpayer dollars do not contribute to trafficking in persons.” Among other things, the order forbids federal contractors from “using misleading or fraudulent recruitment practices during the recruitment of employees.” It also prohibits not paying “return transportation costs [to the employee’s home country] upon the end of employment.”
Since the federal government is the largest purchaser of goods and services in the world, this order has the potential to make a big difference.”

The quote above comes from Break Point, a Christian Organization started by the late Chuck Colson, who cared deeply about modern day slavery.

I will keep signing petitions that come my way, and hopefully someday I will be able to do more. I urge you to do the same, and someday you might also get an e-mail from the White House. 🙂

Have a fantastic day!
